Timber Roof Barn

North Brabant, the Netherlands

A former workshop and storage space are transformed into a single dwelling and extended with a rooftop addition: a roof barn.
Two existing volumes are connected at ground level. At their junction, a vertical core with full-height cabinetry organizes circulation and storage, forming the spatial link to the upper floor. The longitudinal façade of the former storage and the rear façade of the workshop are fully opened, allowing both volumes to connect directly to a patio garden.
A new volume is placed on top of both structures. In one of the roofs, a precise cut is made, allowing the characteristic street façade to remain legible. The intervention preserves the village image while transforming the ensemble.
The addition is entirely constructed in timber, with CLT floors and timber frame walls. Its form and materiality refer to the black timber barns in the surrounding context. The roof barn is recognizable as a familiar type, yet repositioned—lifted onto the existing roofscape.
The upper floor becomes a single open space, organized by a large sliding partition. Sleeping, working, and bathing can be separated or combined as needed.
A transformation in which the barn remains, but changes position.
